Summary

An example of trow enchantment: a fiddler disappeared for ten years thinking it was one night.

Shetland was always great for fiddle playing and yarns. One tale was of a fiddler who set off to play at a wedding but didn't arrive. He was coming through the hills when he heard music from underground. A hole opened and he was magically drawn further in till he could see little people dancing and playing. They beckoned him in and he played along with the little trow [troll, fairy] fiddler. He played with them for what he thought was one night, but then found he'd been away for ten years.
