Summary

In this pastoral love song, the singer tells of his love for Nannie. Desipte his low degree, he is content with his lot, caring nothing for worldy possessions, and desiring only his sweetheart.

Item Notes

5 verses of 4 lines. Composed by Robert Burns and first published in the Kilmarnock edition of his poems and songs in 1786. Not to be confused with the similarly titled 'My Nanny, O' by Allan Ramsay (Roud Folk Song Index no. 8653), from which Burns selected the melody for his composition.

Lugar Water is a small tributary of the River Ayr.
