Summary
Fragments of a song in which the singer bids his sweetheart farewell as he prepares to leave his native Huntly:
Assist me, all you Muses, my downcast spirits raise
And join me in full chorus to sing brave Huntly's praise,
For I leave the girl behind me whose charms is all my joy
And my heart remains in Huntly, though [I'm] far fae Bogieside.
It's down the road to Huntly lad, it's pleasant steps I've trod
[Lucy Stewart cannot recall more of the lyrics].
Item Notes
Fragment, 1 verse of 4 lines, plus fragment of a further verse. Sung to the tune of 'Bogie's Bonnie Belle' (Roud Folk Song Index no. 2155), probably owing to the similarity in the titles of the two songs.
Gavin Greig relates a communication citing John Riddel of Craigmill as the author of this piece; he is also said to have composed 'Jock o Rhynie' (Roud 2136) (Greig-Duncan, vol. 8, p. 376).
