Summary

Funerals and burials on Tiree.

The contributor's ancestors were all buried at Soroby in Tiree. They used to carry the coffins there on bales, but now they would be transported on the bus. When the funeral procession was walking along, one man would call for new men to take the coffin for a turn every 40 yards. They would not stop on the way for a drink, but would get whisky and biscuits and cheese after the burial. There would be fights at funerals, but it was not exactly the men who were fighting, but the whisky that was in them that was fighting. This custom has now [1968] stopped. The wake is held in a house, rather than sitting drinking whisky by the graveyard wall.
