Summary - Factor John Campbell: the Bàillidh Mòr.
The Bàillidh Mòr was a mainlander and was very cruel to the people of Tiree. His name was John Campbell, and he was also known as Long John. He was the factor on the island during the time of the potato blight. The cottars and tenants would have to work a number of days each year for the factor for nothing. The factor could even summon men to go to other areas to work for him, and if they refused, they would be evicted. The factor's word was law. The islanders did not blame the Duke of Argyll for the bad treatment, as the factor often went behind his back. The factors would have several servants in the house, but they would not always be paid.
