Summary - The farmer's three counsels for the poor man.
A poor man left his wife and son at home and went to work for a farmer for a year, for a wage of a pound and a pair of shoes. At the end of the year the farmer offered advice for a pound, which he took: always take the long clean road and not the short dirty one. He stayed another year, and the same thing happened. The farmer's counsel was, never stay in a house where there is a young wife with an old husband. At the end of the third year, he agreed again to take advice rather than his pound: think three times before you act. He would stay no longer but left with the three pairs of shoes and no money. The farmer's advice kept him safe on the way home, and prevented him from acting hastily when he got there. He also found that his three pounds in wages were hidden in one of the shoes.
