Summary

Vegetables grown at Tunskeen; salted herring for the winter; very little game obtainable.

Tatties [potatotes], cabbage and kale were grown in the garden at Tunskeen, but not turnips. They were occasionally got from the farms. The family had a firkin (barrel) of salt herring in the winter. You took out as many herring as you needed at a time, put them in cold water, hung them up to dry and then fried them. There was no question of taking any game such as grouse or trout. It was well guarded against poachers, and there was a shooting lodge nearby. There were some rabbits, and white mountain hare.
