Summary
In this tragic ballad, the singer mourns the loss of his sweetheart Ellen, who led a sorrowful life. She lost her parents at the age of eleven, and she herself died some years later of an incurable illness. Her untimely death prevented their marriage, but the singer vows to be a pilgrim to her grave until he too dies and they are reunited in Heaven.
