Summary
An example of an excellent herdsman in Balranald, North Uist.
Somhairle, from Tigharry, was a herdsman in Balranald who was an expert at his work. When he grew old, he could no longer go to the sales to sell the Balranald chief's stock. Once, when the Balranald chief returned from a sale, he asked Somhairle's opinion regarding the bullocks he had bought. Somhairle recognised one of them as being of the Balranald stock, and therefore could not be used on the farm. When the Balranald chief investigated the matter, it was confirmed that the bullock did indeed belong to the Balranald stock. He took the seller to law. His money was refunded and he got 300 guineas in compensation.
