Summary
Marion Campbell's early memories of South Uist and schooling.
Marion Campbell sees a big difference in South Uist. She was never asked to go to school and never learnt English. The children took a peat to school for the fire. When the boys did something wrong, the schoolmaster took their trousers off and smacked their backsides. Children also got the belt. Once, when Marion's brother Hector did not allow the schoolmaster to take his trousers off, he was given the belt over the ears. Hector walked out of school and never went back.
