Summary

Fishermen's superstitions: taboo animals, whistling, unlucky people.

Fishermen were very superstitious. Nobody dared mention rabbits or pigs. A small boy might have gone out with his father to the herring fishing, but if he had whistled the fishermen would have stucken [knifed] him, as whistling was supposed to raise the wind. There was a certain woman who was supposed to bring bad luck, and the fishermen would turn back if they saw her on the way to sea. George Port confirms that salmon was another thing that couldn't be mentioned. He recalls catching one at sea and giving everybody a bit: that was all right.
