Summary
Berneray history.
The contributor recalls some events in the history of Berneray. When Roderick Campbell became its proprietor the local people wanted portions of land for themselves. When they saw his boat coming with his livestock they turned him away by cutting his mast ropes. The local men involved were each given six-month prison sentences in Lochmaddy court. Some information is given about two relatives, one of whom persuaded the other not to take part in the protest. The prison sentences were served in Inverness. One prisoner, Iain Òg, died soon after his release from jail.
