Summary
A mother asks her son to explain the blood on his sword. She does not believe it is that of an animal, and he confesses it is his brother's, killed over a silly cause. He is going away in a bottomless boat and will return when the sun and the moon meet in the glen [i.e. never].
Maggie Stewart learned the song long ago and it was recalled to her memory when she heard Jeannie [Robertson] sing it.
