Summary
The singer becomes a soldier. Children play around the guard post, and he is told to take their names but only takes one, so he is charged with neglect of duty. He is punished and in revenge attempts to shoot the captain, but shoots the colonel instead and is sentenced to death. He has no parents to speak for him but has a girl who would give her life to save McCafferty.
Hamish Henderson asks Maggie Stewart if she has heard the story that the song was once forbidden to be sung in the British Army, and she says she has. She does not recall from whom she learned the song.
