Summary

Betsy Bell lives in the Overgate and is single, looking for a husband. Sandy Wright asks her to marry him but after she has got her wedding dress he tells her it is a joke. She meets Janet Cook with a lad and hears she is getting married despite being a three-times-married, seventy-year-old drunk. Betsy recounts her own virtues of thrift and hard work but says that if she is left hanging on the nail at least she can ask what is wrong with all the men.
