Summary - Harvest and harvest customs, especially the harvest home dance.
Helen Galloway reminisces about harvest time. She talks about how the sheaves were bound, food and drink in the harvest field, carting with horses, and the art of building stacks. The harvest home dance on the bigger farms was called the 'kirn'. It was usually held in the barn, with two fiddlers and sometimes a piano. There were country dances such as quadrilles, lancers, Petronella, the Military Two-Step, and the Dashing White Sergeant, as well as waltzes and heavy dances such as the Scots Reel and Eightsome Reel. Foxtrots and two-steps came in after the First World War. At kirns sentimental songs were sung. People danced until two in the morning then rose at half past four for milking.
Corn dollies are a new thing, but harvesters used to make corn badges to wear in their buttonholes.
