Summary - The winter diet in Orkney; the preserving and cooking of sillocks.
People had plenty of food for the winter in Ethel Findlater's young day, when there were many heavy snowstorms. They had milk, [oat]meal, home-made bannocks, and pork hanging in the roof, and people came around selling sillocks [young coalfish] at 7d [sevenpence] a bucketful during harvest time. Some were eaten fresh with bannocks and some salted and dried indoors. The sillocks were tied tail to tail and hung on a wire speetle [skewer] set at either side of the lum [chimney]. They were cooked on a brandiron, which hung from a hook and chain links in the chimney. Once cooked, the sillocks softened again. They were split with the thumb and eaten with a buttered bannock. Oat bannocks were also baked on the brandiron and could be square or round.
