Horse racing in North Uist.
Horse racing used to take place in Baleshare and Bayhead on St Michael's Day. The horse race in North Uist was known as 'odaidh'. The Baleshare horse race stopped before the Bayhead horse race. The contributor was fifteen or sixteen when it stopped in Bayhead. The horses ran for a mile and the winner got £1. A man who was taking part in the Baleshare race was badly injured. A story is told of a man who won the Bayhead race. There is a place in Baleshare called 'A' Ruith Bheag'. The name is associated with the horse racing.
