Summary
Only a narrow range of vegetables was grown until the First World War.
Turnip, cabbage and onion were the only vegetables grown until the First World War, when carrots, leeks and radishes became common. In some parts, kale was topped (shorn about an inch from the top) while still growing and used for spring greens. [Tape runs out.]
