Summary

Sheep were let onto the beach to eat seaweed; people ate shellfish, birds' eggs and wildfowl.

Sheep were let onto the ebb [between high and low water] to eat seaweed, and clearly enjoyed it, as they always ran back to it. Laura Malcolmson has never heard of people eating seaweed.

Shellfish were eaten, and her family ate black whelks. Some people also ate various types of crabs, but lobster was not eaten. People ate the eggs of gulls and eider duck, but not crows' eggs. Wild birds were generally not caught, but wild ducks and geese were sometimes shot. She is not aware of anyone eating cormorants, but believes they did so in the North Isles.
