Summary

Shetland Fair Isle knitting; popularisation of the patterns after the First World War.

There was always Fair Isle knitting as far back as Laura Malcolmson can remember. Her mother knitted Fair Isle stockings and gloves. The jumpers were introduced with the First World War. The Prince of Wales played golf in America in a Fair Isle pullover and that started the orders rolling in.

Tall knitted caps with a tassel on the end were worn by the old men. These could be pulled down and fixed at the side to make a gravat [muffler].
