Summary
Death customs in the Braes.
When a death occurred, the body, whilst in the house, was watched during the night [caithris]. The contributor believes this started at a time when body-snatching was common.
There was no cemetery in the Braes, and so the dead were carried to Portree. There were resting-places all the way, where people had a dram and a bite to eat. Due to the whisky, there would often be fighting at the cemetery.
