Summary

Uses of whale oil, seal oil and fish liver oils.

The contributor describes uses of whale oil, seal oil and fish liver oils. She gives a description of a 'spreadhan', a pan used for melting fish livers on the fire. The oil was put in a jar and cooled, then used to oil wool before spinning. Whale oil stuck to the wool, but fish oil washed out of the finished tweed easily.

She tells of a beached whale on the shore and getting many bottles of oil from it. Seal oil was the best of all. It was strained and given to children with measles. When there was a shortage of grain in Uist, a man in Berneray, Tormod Lachlainn, sent over four or five bottles of seal oil and these kept the animals from starving.
