Summary - Hay Marshall, a Perth gentleman, marries Rosie Anderson. She goes to an assembly and is escorted home by Lord Elgin. Her husband objects and sends Rosie to London where she gives birth to a son. Hay Marshall is distraught and goes to London to seek a divorce. He has twenty witnesses and Rosie has only two. She wonders what she is to do. She can only hope to meet some officer.

The song is based on a real incident. Sheila Douglas put the words published by Gavin Greig to a tune she collected from an English singer.
