Summary
Local mills.
The contributor remembers when there were two working meal mills in the area. The oats and barley were dried, flailed and winnowed before the grain was taken to the mill. Sheepskin sieves were used for winnowing. People brought peat to the kiln at the mill, staying overnight while the grain dried. A portion of the grain, known as the miller's dues, was given as payment. The husks were used for making sowens. The mills stopped working about the time of the First World War.
