Summary
Thatched houses.
The couples were erected first. These were made of pine which was found in the peat moss, and joined with oak pins. They were covered with turf and topped with heather and marram grass. The inner wall of the house was lined with turf. Lime, made from cockle and mussel shells, was used to plaster the outer walls.
The houses had wattle doors made from rope of blaeberry tendrils. This rope was also used to make the snoods of small fishing-lines. The chimney was made of a wooden frame covered with fodder and clay.
Other features described include fireplaces, floors, box-beds, pillows, and partitions.
