Summary
Poverty and the potato famine in Tiree.
The contributor tells of the poverty that was in Balephuil in his father's day. People used to keep two or three cows, but they did not fetch a high price when sold. He remembers a man telling him that his father kept the skins of potatoes, so that the eye could be used as seed for the next year's potatoes. This was during the potato famine. People bought meal from the miller if they could. Those that had their own barley and oats paid the miller in meal to grind it for them.
