Summary
Families from the Buckie area came to Australia to start a trawling industry there.
Alec Smith came to Australia with his family in 1928, aged six, from Ianstown, near Buckie. Many relatives and friends from the Buckie area were in Sydney before them, his uncle from 1911. He lists the fishing villages near Buckie that the people came from. In Scotland, the fisherfolk thought they were cleverer than the farm folk, and looked down on them. They came to Australia to establish a trawling industry in Sydney. The Scottish fishing industry collapsed in the 1920s and with it the fortunes of the fisher families. It did not revive until after the Second World War.
