Summary
Information about herring fishing in sailboats.
The sailboat crews would have contests on the way home from the fishing grounds. They didn't fish further south than Barra or further north than Stornoway. They often fished around Skye. They sold the herring in Uig to east coast buyers. The herring was taken away by lorry and steamer.
The boats had sails and decks. They slept and ate in the cabin. There were no wheelhouses to begin with. The fishermen wore boots that came over the knee. There was no seasickness. They ate biscuits and bread, occasionally with butter. They were never away for longer than a week.
