Summary
Potato blight in North Uist in the 1840s.
Norman Johnson talks about the effect of the potato blight in North Uist. The government set up two flour depots - one in Portree and one in Tobermory - under the control of the landlords. People sometimes had to work in exchange for the flour. The Free Church Destitution Fund also sent a boat to the island to distribute oatmeal.
