Information about the Ceàrdach Ruadh in Baleshare, North Uist.
The smithy known as the Ceàrdach Ruadh in Baleshare was one of the oldest buildings in Europe. It was the victim of coastal erosion. The contributor saw a flintstone at the site. The smithy was built during the Palaeolithic Age. The flintstone was used for scraping animal hides. The builders were skilled stonemasons. Fine flagstones were found there 150 years ago [i.e. 1820s].
