Summary - Fishing after the Clearances.
After the Clearances, and the building of the fishing villages of Portnahaven and Port Wemyss, the combined fishing fleet consisted of about 60 boats. Larger boats generally had about seven of a crew. They fished from Barra to the Butt of Lewis. The contributor's grandfather had a large boat called 'The Maid of Islay'. Sold their catches in N. Ireland in return for livestock.
