'Caraid nan Gàidheal' was the Rev. Dr Norman MacLeod (1783-1862), who used his influence to secure Government aid for the people of the Highlands during the potato famines of 1836-37 and 1847. He also published, in Gaelic, periodicals, a book for schools, sermons and a dictionary.
