Summary
Cattle sales in Tiree.
There were no cattle sales in Hector Kennedy's boyhood; buyers came to the island, but mainly for horses. The factor and the farmer, Tom Barr, bought all the stirks that were for sale in the island between them. The prices were low - three or four pounds for a stirk before the First World War. In April 1916 the first cattle sale was held at the schoolhouse in Hilipol, and that was the first time the contributor recalls a stirk fetching ten pounds. The factor was annoyed because the mainland buyers put the prices up.
