Summary

The end of the Bruce estate and its purchase by crofters.

The last Bruce laird, Willum [William], was very considerate, according to Andrew Hunter, who remembers him well. Two families, the Jacobsons and Johnsons, who settled in Brunt Hamarsland and the South Pund, had been evicted from their homes in Northmaven for refusing to fish for the landlord there. When the Bruce estate fell into debt and Willum handed it over to trustees, the crofters took the chance to buy their ground. There are not more than five or six [in 1974] who do not own their own crofts.
