Summary
Earmarking sheep on Fair Isle.
The contributor discusses identification marks in sheeps' lugs [ears], with each croft having its distinct marks, which he describes. The marks are regulated by the hill committee. Marks are made when the sheep have just lambed. Paint marks are also used.
The sheep were gathered together twice for rooing [hand plucking] or clipping on 20th June and for lambing. The tup lambs were gathered again at the end of September and the ewes at the end of October. The contributor gives information about selling wool.
