Summary - Jack's wizard master turned against him, but Jack used shape-changing to escape.
A ship's captain, who was really a black laird [laird of the black arts], took young Jack away and taught him. Jack beat the wizard at magic, so the wizard changed him into a horse and tied him up without water. A girl took pity on him, and he escaped into a stream as a salmon, pursued by the wizard as an otter. He changed into a ring on a woman's finger, and the wizard offered to work on her house. Jack told her not to hand over the ring, but to scatter peas and barley. Jack changed into a grain of barley, the wizard changed into a cock, and Jack changed into a fox and killed the wizard.
