Contributors - Tom Tulloch
Reporters - Alan J. Bruford

Summary - Omens abounded before the Gloup Disaster.

Many people reckoned they had received warnings about the Gloup disaster before the event: one boat had inexplicably overturned at its moorings at the weekend; a black cloud followed the funeral procession of a fisherman who died shortly before the storm; the minister at the funeral told some of the other fishermen that he would not see them again.

One man who was lost in the storm had seen six phantom sixareens [six-oared boats] heading for the fishing grounds from Nethertown; the neighbour of some of the fishermen lost from Nethertown warned them not to go when she dreamed of their boat burning; another woman kept seeing drops of blood on one her husband's shirts as it hung to dry; another saw her husband go by the window after he'd left for the fishing, but he never came in: it was his feyness she had seen. Tom Tulloch's father himself observed that the birds didn't touch any of the fish that washed up around the shore following the disaster.
