Summary
Parish nicknames were common in Shetland.
The contributor describes nicknames for people from the different parishes of Shetland. Each parish had a different name and people from his own parish [Nesting] were known as the 'dindlings', or wind-blown chaff.
Yell people were called 'sheep thieves' and were said to catch sheep on a line baited with cabbage. The contributor tells a brief story about a humorous use of this name.
