Summary

The ballad tells of Johnny going out hunting against his mother's advice, and his encounter with foresters, whom he kills, including his nephew.

Stanley Robertson knew this song from his father and from Jeannie Robertson, but he first learned it from Maggie [Stewart], who sang it faster, and sang 'grewhunds' for 'greyhounds'. He recalls the circumstances of his learning the song from Maggie, when she lived in Wales Street [Aberdeen]. Maggie was married to Davy 'Burn Bonnet', who was her cousin. She was the daughter of Old Bill, and the sister of Stanley's granny Maria. Davy was the son of Duncan.
