Summary

Crofts given to soldiers returning from battle.

At the time of the Crimean War, the duke would give crofts to soldiers who returned from battle. A veteran of this war often visited the contributor's father. The contributor's great-grandfather was given his croft when he came to Tiree with the factor. He was originally from Lismore, and his wife from Inverary. He tells the humorous story of how his great-grandmother caught the thief who was stealing cattle from the duke.

Item Notes

Although the contributor does not specify which duke he is referring to, it is more than likely that it is the Duke of Argyll.
