Summary

This is a love song in which a woman says that she cannot sleep, as her lover has not come. In the first verse, she says that she climbed to the high hill so that she could see the Point of Stoer from which the men sailed. She describes how her lover saved others when the boat struck the rocks. She describes her lover as being fair and golden haired, the jewel of the young men. If he came to her, she would let him in.

The contributor got the song from Margaret Duncan, Islay.

Kate Nicolson (KN):

Cadal cha dèan mi
Sùgradh cha dèan mise
Nochd chan fhaigh mi tàmh
'S gun thu ghràidh a' tighinn.

Dhìrich mi 'n cnoc àrd
Fhuair mi àite suidh' ann
Timcheall Rubha Stòirr
Far 'n do sheòl na gillean.

'S bhuail i air an tràigh
Far nach tràigh an duileasg
Leum thu aiste ghràidh
'S shàbhail thu iad uile.

'S cha b' ann dubh no ruadh
Bha thu luaidh nan gillean
Ach gu buidhe bàn
Àilleagan mo chridhe.

Bha mi 'n-uiridh slàn
'S tha mi 'm-bliadhna briste
Chunnacas long air tràigh
'S i na mìle bioran.

'S nan tigeadh tu rùin
Mun dùininn-sa 'n uinneag
Dhèanainn-sa dhut rùm
Ged 'iodh triùir a-muigh ann.

Dòmhnall Eairdsidh Dòmhnallach (DE): Agus cò aig a-nis a thuirt sibh a chuala sibh am fear sin?

KN: Aig Margaret Duncan. 'S e, Margaret Duncan. Seadh, Margaret Duncan. Piuthar do mhinistear a bha shuas an Stadhlaigearraidh.

DE: Agus 's ann a mhuinntir... a mhuinntir Ìle, an ann?

KN: À Ìle thàinig iad. Daoine laghach ciatach. Gu dearbh cha robh a leithid ann gu seinn.
