At one time, the 'Department' would supply a stallion. A fellow by the name of Ritchie used to come from Inverness and travel around the country. The crofters would take their mares to him for servicing. Smith-work is discussed, with special reference to a smith called Gobha Mhic Eòin. There is mention of the horseman's word and some related black arts in Dumfries.
