Summary
Traditional version of a pastoral courtship song in which the singer meets her shepherd sweetheart by a river.
Item Notes
Robert Burns (1759-1796) adapted a traditional version of this song (sometimes credited to Isobel 'Tibbie' Pagan of Muirkirk) from Rev. Clunie in 1787 and had it included in James Johnson's 'Scots Musical Museum'. Burns later rewrote the song (the first verse of which begins "Hark, the mavis evening sang").
