This song first appeared in Robert Burns' collection of bawdy songs 'The Merry Muses of Caledonia' (1799, pp. 109-110); it was later included by Ewan MacColl in his 'Folk Songs and Ballads of Scotland' (1965, p. 55), from where Jeannie Robertson acquired it, later passing it on to her daughter Lizzie Higgins.
