Summary
A love song composed by a minister to his wife, who was much younger than him. There was much disapproval of the match from her family and she was sent away for a time. He begs her not to forsake him. He says that although others may see her as being 'dark', in his eyes she is 'pure and innocent'. Although he cannot play the fiddle, he can read and write, and he could deliver a sermon for her better than any man under the sun.
Item Notes
This version of the song mentions a 'daughter of Campbell', and that the composer is seeking a parish in Canna. This differs from some other versions.
