Information about the dangers of planting trees too close to the house. Willow is good for drying out boggy ground, but the roots will break through drains to find water. They take up 40 gallons of water a day in the summer. Poplar is the most dangerous tree to plant near the house as the roots will damage the foundations. It will dry out clay soil, creating the risk of subsidence. Ways to measure the correct distance to plant trees from the house and information about the rowan, which used to be planted at the gate to ward off evil spirits. An old oak tree will lose 150 gallons of water on a summer day.
