Summary

A song of nostalgia and anti-landlordism. The poetess looks back at her youth on the Isle of Skye. She relates that she went to live in the big city and married a fisherman who provided well for her. However, she never forgot the island and wished to be back there.

She asks those who care to listen to take heed of the tragedy which has befallen the people; the thousands who were cleared from the land and forced to go across the sea. She predicts that if they are strong and fight against it, that they will yet see their cattle back in their folds and the crofters satisfied that the English [landlords] will be chased away from the misty green isle.
