Summary
Fragment of an American song in which a man decides to leave his sweetheart at home in order to become a cowboy and take a herd down to Mexico. When he arrives at his destination, he regrets leaving her, and writes her a letter. When she fails to reply, he returns home, only to discover that she has married a rich man, and no longer wants him. He curses her and her wealth, and vows to ride out to danger in the West.
Item Notes
J. Porter and H. Gower ('Jeannie Robertson', 1995, pp. 241-242) note that Jeannie Robertson learned this song from the singing of American folk singer Pete Seeger. It is a cowboy version of the similar 'Early, Early in the Spring'.
