In 1966 he began working as transcriber of Gaelic tapes at the School of Scottish Studies from where he retired as lecturer in 1983. Before that he was headteacher of Coaltown of Balgonie Primary School in Fife. He also wrote poems about community life in Berneray - these were published in Gairm magazine regularly from 1953-1961.
